I had a 10″ piece of walnut plank in the scrap bin, so I decided to turn it into travel box for my pipe. All the wood is taken from a single piece of scrap, part of which I re-sawed for the box sides, and the other part of which became the block to hold the accessories that is inside the box. The hardware was purchased from Brusso. Nice stuff. It is finished with boiled linseed oil, which goes well with the rustic look of the pipe.
The Box houses my pipe, batteries and a small bottle of naturally extracted tobacco liquid made from some of my favorite cigars. All interior surfaces which touch the pipe are lined with leather.
The swing arm pivots on a stainless steel flat head shoulder bolt, secured by a stainless steel nut embedded in the underside of the block. Some blue locktite keeps the screw from moving when you pivot the swing arm. The arm has a magnetic latch to hold it in place. The action on the swingarm and latch is pretty sweet.
I added a couple of blocks as an afterthought to keep the bottle and pipe from moving. If I had it to do all over again, I would have made it a bit bigger so I would have room to fully capture the bottle instead of using a block. Ah well.
Overall, I think it came out pretty well.
